So I took Depo Provera for nearly two years (started end of 2003 and stopped mid 2005) and this is how it affected me:
I actually LOST weight.. about 15 lbs.
I stopped getting my period after the third shot.
Sex was painful after a year of being on the shot but the pain ceased with additional lubrication.
My sex drive remained the same.
There was light random spotting during the first few months of being on the shot.
I started getting cramps randomly and mild headaches.
Ummm... that's all I can remember at this point. I stopped taking the shot when my doctor told me that they found out that it causes bone density loss and possibly osteoporosis with long term use. She said that she couldnt stop me from taking it, but she recommended that I stop because the studies of bone density loss were for those taking Depo for a year.. and I had already been on it for longer.
When I first heard of Depo from my doctor she warned me that taking it would be a big risk because once the shot is in your body, there's no way of taking it out. You just have to wait it out until the shot "finishes." So you're pretty much stuck with whatever happens for 3 months.
I think that maybe the problem lies in that women are not being informed of the possible risks of Depo.. maybe new developments in the drug have helped decrease the side effects?
In terms of physical shape and such before first starting on the shot, I was in decent condition. I wasn't overweight but I wasn't thin either. I didn't really work out much.. and I ate maybe 3 meals a day. I do not smoke, and did not back then either. I usually was under a lot of stress because I went to school full time and worked about 30 hour weeks minimum (and still do) but I had no mood changes or depression. I drink a lot of milk though and take in a lot of calcium through cheese and such. I also have a strong immune system.
I hope this offers a better perspective on a positive experience from Depo than the previous women who've liked it have written. I have no complaints about my experience with Depo because I have had more problems with the birth control pill and birth control ring (yes, I've tried other options). I will more than likely be going back onto the shot because other methods have not been working out for me.
Hopefully I've shed a different view of Depo Provera.
