I was about 24-ish when I was given Depo. I was reasonably healthy, slim, athletic, full of energy with a very fast metabolism.
I had the shot 3 times but stopped taking it as my weight plummeted. My doctor said that I may gain a LITTLE weight. I thought that would be ok as i could do with putting on a half a stone (7lbs) to a stone (14lbs) as I always struggled to keep weight on me due to my fast metabolism.
In 9 months I gained a total of 5 st 11lbs (81lbs). My body weight almost doubled.
Seven years later I am still battling with my weight. I have lost the excess. I now fluctuate between 11st 3lbs (157lbs) and 11st 11lbs (165lbs) and have been for a couple of years now. the lowest I have managed to get down to is 10 st 3lbs (143lbs).
Since gaining all this weight, I only eat a fraction of the food I ate before. My metabolism has come almost to a halt.
My mobility was much reduced by all the excess weight I was carrying around, and therefore the muscle that I did have wasted away where i was no longer active, thus slowing my metabolism even further.
I have severe constipation, I cannot go to the toilet unless I take laxatives. I sometimes try to give give myself a break from these as I know the long term effects that they can have on my body, but when I do, I end up going about 5 days without going to the toilet.
This in turn causes me to feel sick much of the time, gives me headaches, causes my belly to bloat out as if I were pregnant, makes my skin break out with spots which become painfully inflamed and ugly (as my acne, which I had not suffered with since I was a teenager, had been triggered off since taking the Depo), I would feel fatuiged and sluggish.
I eventually became severely depressed, too concious to go out anywhere because of my size and acne. I lost contact with all my friends. I went from being outgoing and confident to being a withdrawn introvert. I feel that Depo has ruined my life. I spent much of my twenties as a single woman with no social life all down to this damn drug.
I am, however, much more on track now, but everything I do is still overshadowed by my size.
I am doing roughly 2 - 3 hours of strenuous working out in the gym about 3 times per week, and have been for the past few months, but although my cardio-vascular system seems to be feeling the benefits, the weight/inches just dont seem to be shifting.
